We are pleased to offer for auction a fantastic and early Chinese ceremonial dagger.  The blade, cast of standard form, with two small crossguards surrounding the pierced nei, has a straight handle decorated on each side with a fine taotie design, and is covered overall in a rich milky green patina with mineral encrustation.  The second photo shows a comparable blade that sold in 2015.

The blade comes from a local estate and was originally acquired by the owner through her relationship with a San Francisco art dealer who knew a government official that worked alongside Deng Pufang in the 1970s and 1980s.  The official was responsible for cultural preservation and around 1990 had to sell most of his collection, a large number of pieces which went to the dealer in San Francisco.  The piece was then brought to Chicago around 1991.  The blade dates from the late Shang Dynasty to the early Zhou Dynasty.

The blade measures approximately 10.5 inches long.
