This is an antique Chinese amethystine quartz jar (or censer) with removable fitted top, intricately hand carved with pomegranate fruit and branches, a flower, a bird, and two dogs. It is from the estate of a Manhattan couple who travelled the world collecting art and antiques. Based on other works from their collection, the date is likely late 19th century.
Height: approx. 4"
Width: approx. 4 1/4"
Depth: approx. 2 3/4"
Weight: 13.5 oz.
Condition: I am aware of two chips: the uppermost dog's tail, which was attached at its end to the nearby pomegranate, has chipped off, leaving a 1/4" and 1/8" chip on either side (see photo #11); a section of the navel of the pomegranate may also be chipped (see photo #12). These are in addition to general wear from age, gathered sediment, etc.
Estate item #72b.
